Moving has been proven to be a hassle, time-consuming, and even nerve-racking. All of these unwanted situations can easily be overcome if you plan ahead of time and organize your duties. Even moving from the first floor to the third one requires hard work and determination, imaging when you have to relocate cross country.
If you want to have a smooth transition and avoid being lost in translation, there are certain things that you need to handle before you embark in this exciting and adventurous journey. First thing you’ll need: a notebook and a pen; oh! And obviously time. Take at least an hour a day, regardless of how busy your schedule is. Use this time to write down everything that you want to do and when you want it done. Once you have this step taken care of, start dividing the tasks amongst who will be taking upon that task. All this logistical arrangements will ensure that your relocation will be done without a hitch.
Choosing who will help you with your cross country move will determine how you will be describing your relocation experience in a future. It will either be a pleasant and exciting endeavor, or a complete nightmare. The second thing you need to do (after you get your handy notebook) is to start doing a little bit of research. If you know anyone who recently moved, ask for referrals of which moving companies they used. Also make sure you ask about their movers and how good or bad were the moving services they provided you with. Since you know exactly what you will be taking with you during your move, it is time to go ahead and follow the following easy steps.
- Go over the inventory you already jot down in your notebook. Make sure that you including all items that need to be moved. Analyze whether o not you’re taking your big, bulky items with you or if it is better for you to buy them once you move and settled down in your new home.
- Document everything. As soon as you know that you need to move and that you will need the assistance of moving companies in your area, take photographs of your belongings. This way you will have a strong proof of the condition your prized possessions were before anyone touched them. It is better if you take those pictures that already include the date.
- Insurance. Moving companies will include some type of coverage but it is not a full insurance plan. These are usually provided by a third party. When you are searching for a moving service provider, search for insurance as well.
- Choosing amongst moving companies. You will need to gather between three to five numbers and start calling. The customer service representative will be able to provide you with a moving quote (search for free moving quotes) based on the information you will provide them with. Sometimes it is best to have an “on-site” quote. This way they will be aware of the weight of your items and the surroundings of your place (if there are stairs, tight walkways, etc)
- Moving quotes. Now that you have all three moving quotes, start analyzing what each of them offers you. Remember that not always the most expensive one is the best one. Look at which moving services you are getting for your money. Once you have your choice, call the moving company. A cross country move needs to be scheduled with time not only to be able to get the dates and trucks that you need, but it will also allow you enough time to deal with any “surprises” that might arise.
