The ax has fallen at Federated Media Publishing…, the online advertising company founded by former journalist John Battelle. Seven of the company’s 90 employees were laid off Friday.
The layoffs, according to a company representative, were almost exclusively on the display-advertising side of the company. Federated also creates interactive marketing campaigns, and with the display ad downturn in full effect, that’s where the company has chosen to focus. Federated doesn’t plan to ignore display advertising, but hope to make several hires on the marketing side.
“Given our journalistic heritage, we don’t want to bury the lede: Today FM

Yahoo has fired up a major part of its Yahoo Open Strategy, the ability to broadcast blog postings, tweets, photo uploads, Yelp reviews, and other activity to members of your online social circle.
The change to Yahoo Updates makes the company potentially more competitive with services such as FriendFeed and Facebook, which do much the same thing, though they also offer to show activity on other services including Amazon, Digg, and Google Reader.

What makes a social network work? Is it the design of the site? The advertising on it? The logo? It’s none of these things, of course.
It’s the people.
MySpace proves that you don’t need pretty design, and Facebook shows that if you start by identifying an audience (college students) and give them a better way to do something they’re already doing (getting to know each other), it is enough to get a social project off the ground.
Fuego Nation…, a new social network launching into private beta Friday, runs counter to just about everything I know about

In another expansion of its Profiles site, Google has enabled people to share their contact information with selected contacts, a move that offers modest convenience for users of the service and valuable data to Google.
The feature shows as a “Contact info” tab; clicking on it shows whatever contact information you’ve entered and the note, “You are not sharing your contact information with anyone. Edit your profile to add contact info, and then choose who to share it with so that they always have the most up-to-date information.”
